Deconstructing gestures

What specific aspects of impact gestures drive the marimba illusion?  Does the illusion require a sudden change of motion direction simultaneous with the onset of the impact sound?  How can performers best use such motions in their playing?
James Armontrout
BA (UVA), 2007

Using the virtual marimbist, James Armontrout was able to deconstruct the striking gestures used in the original illusion, establishing that it is driven by the duration of the post-impact motion, a finding with both practical and theoretical implications.  After completing his project, we gave a poster presentation on this research at the 2007 Auditory Perception, Cognition, and Action meeting in Long Beach, CA.  Additionally, we have published this work in Attention, Perception, & Psychophysics (which can be downloaded here).
