Previous research suggests that visual information does not alter auditory judgments of duration. Therefore one challenge in my research has been to explain the psychological principles behind the marimba illusion. Through a number of experiments published in the Journal of Experimental Psychology: Human Perception and Performance, I have found that causality plays a key role. Gestures integrate with (and therefore influence) only those sounds they could have caused. Manipulations to the stimuli that break this causal link fail to show integration.
