Michael Schutz is the founding director of the Maple lab. With a unique background in percussion performance (BMA, MM), experimental psychology (MA, PhD), and computer science (BS), he is able to explore core issues of music cognition from new points of view. Much of his research focuses on the role of visual information in music, on which has has published both new empirical research and a comprehensive review of previous work. He is also actively engaged in research on sensory integration, timbre, learning and memory, linguistic-musical parallels, and the communication of affect in music. Fiona is a graduate student in the Maple Lab, pursuing her M.Sc. in through the Department of Psychology,
Neuroscience and Behaviour. She completed her B.Sc. with a specialization in Music Cognition from McMaster in 2011, during which time she was the founding President of McMaster's Undergraduate Music Cognition Society.
She is
currently investigating the influence of movement (tapping) on the perception
of auditory rhythm and would like to study this relationship through complex
movements.
