Michael Schutz is the founding director of the Maple lab.  With a unique background in percussion performance (BMA, MM), experimental psychology (MA, PhD), and computer science (BS), he is able to explore core issues of music cognition from new points of view.  Much of his research focuses on the role of visual information in music, on which has has published both new empirical research and a comprehensive review of previous work.  He is also actively engaged in research on sensory integration, timbre, learning and memory, linguistic-musical parallels, and the communication of affect in music.  For additional information including links to recent TV and radio appearances, please see the Maple Lab press room, and/or www.michaelschutz.net

Fiona Manning (Graduate student)
905.525.9140, ext 27021

Fiona is a graduate student in the Maple Lab, pursuing her M.Sc. in through the Department of Psychology, Neuroscience and Behaviour.  She completed her B.Sc. with a specialization in Music Cognition from McMaster in 2011, during which time she was the founding President of McMaster's Undergraduate Music Cognition Society.  She is currently investigating the influence of movement (tapping) on the perception of auditory rhythm and would like to study this relationship through complex movements.

Jonathan Vaisberg (Undergraduate student)
905.525.9140, ext 27021

Jonathan is in his third year of undergraduate studies at McMaster University, specializing in Music Cognition in the Honours B.Sc Psychology program. His research interests focus on the communication and perception of musical expression. He is currently examining how visual motion affects the temporal perception of auditory sounds. In his spare time, Jonathan sings in the McMaster choir and plays guitar in a local group.

Matthew Poon
(Undergraduate student)

Matthew is piano major at McMaster University, with a background in musical performance, theory, and conducting.  His main research interest is music perception and music theory as related to performance and composition. He is currently working on a project exploring acoustic parallels between music and speech with respect to the communication of emotion.  He is also working on a second project examining speech rhythm and melody in Cantonese.

Jessica is in her fourth year of undergraduate studies at McMaster University, specializing in Music Cognition in the Honours B.A. Psychology program. She is currently volunteering in the Maple lab, assisting in the collection of data for various research projects. Among her many research interests; she is intrigued by the role of tactile and vestibular cues on the perception of music.

Olivia Podolak (Undergraduate student)

Olivia is currently completing her fourth year of the Honours B.Sc. Psychology, Neuroscience & Behaviour undergraduate program, with a specialization in Music Cognition. Her research interests include understanding the cognitive processes involved in sensory perception, learning and memory. In her free time, Olivia is also actively involved in classical piano performance and teaching.
