Communicating affect

How do humans signal affect (i.e., "happiness" and "sadness") without using semantic statements?  Are such cues used in similar ways in language and music?  Working with renowned music cognition expert David Huron, I recently published a paper exploring parallels in the communication of affect in language and music.  I plan on expanding this work in the future, so as to better understand the psychological basis for one of music's gifts - communicating emotions.
